Fact or fiction: Henning edition

Art teacher, Mike Henning has had quite a few myths center around him since he started teaching at U-High in 1992. Despite the rumors flying through the student body, Henning said he had no knowledge of the stories students tell about him.

To debunk these myths, we sat down with Henning to play fact or fiction.

Fact: “He used to be a fire chief,” senior Mason Bray said about his favorite teacher.

“He keeps a pager on his waist that goes off in class,” senior Joselyn Pena said.

“Yeah, I am the assistant fire chief in my town and I have been a firefighter for 19 years,” Henning said.

Fact: Henning once fed deer tacos to his art club students.

“Yeah I make those sometimes for art club. But I remove the fur first, don’t worry,” Henning said.

Fiction: “I heard he killed a dog,” junior Matt Mosele said.

While this stems from a true story, he didn’t actually kill a dog.

“No I didn’t kill a dog, but I did stitch my dog up once. She jumped off a train trussle, hit a rock, and opened her side up. I gave her some aspirin then stitched her up,” Henning said.

Fact: “One time someone got caught under a semi and he used the Jaws of Life to get him out,” Bray said.

“Yes, that is true but I would never call them Jaws of Life. All the guys would laugh at me if I called spreaders that,” Henning said with a chuckle.

Fiction: “He told me one time he can throw katanas, a type of sword, into walls. And can even use nunchucks,” freshman Kate Humphrey said.

“I do not throw katanas but I do throw tomahawks. I have my own little set up. But no, I do not use nunchucks,” Henning said.

Fact: “He always has a pocket constitution in arm’s reach,” Bray said.

“Well, I wouldn’t say arm’s reach, but there are several in my office,” Henning said.
