On October 4, 2024, U-High football delivered an inspirational performance against Glenwood, winning 33-13 at Hancock Stadium. This match marked a significant milestone as it was the first time U-High had defeated a Glenwood team since joining the conference in 2017.
The electric atmosphere, with the crowd cheering loudly, fueled the players’ energy. Senior quarterback Alek Weiland rose to the occasion, throwing for an impressive 318 yards and five touchdowns. Senior receiver and cornerback AJ Holden contributed with four receptions, two touchdowns, and one interception. Weiland’s passing precision played a key role in breaking through Glenwood’s defense, setting the tone early in the game.
Leading up to this crucial matchup, the U-High team focused on improving their skills rather than worrying about their opponents’ strength. “We pushed our team to give their all every rep and every play, and to move past their failure even if they mess up,” senior captain Drew Rader said. Rader’s leadership on the field, combined with the stunning performances by Holden and Weiland, created a winning mindset among teammates.
U-High’s defense, particularly the defensive line, played a pivotal role by creating pressure and forcing key turnovers. The interception in the third quarter shifted the momentum firmly in U-High’s favor, allowing the offense to capitalize and extend its lead.
This victory not only boosts U-High’s confidence heading into the playoffs but also positions them favorably for the conference title. “This win strengthened the mindset that we can play at a high level, and we know for certain that we are an extremely competitive team,” Holden said.
The coaching staff, led by Coach Brody Walworth, provided firm motivation, emphasizing the importance of hard work and determination. “I mean it’s cliché, but [we will] really be doing the same thing we have been doing,” Walworth said. “I think that’s where some teams go wrong—changing things up can lead to mistakes. I’m just really confident in my team, and I feel if we play how we play, we will continue to move forward.”
U-High will face Manteno for the first round of playoffs tomorrow, November 1, at 7 p.m.
