The Growing Talent of U-High Photographers

As the school year quickly flashes by, many students are trying to capture their favorite moments. For some U-High students, photography is more than just a hobby; it is a means of documenting their journey from their first to final year at U-High.
"This photo is one of my favorites that I captured, because it was a high intense playoff game when they were up by a lot," Zacharias said. "I was able to capture a moment when one of the top players truly felt pride in his work."
Gabe Zacharias (12)

Gabe Zacharias is fairly new to the photography scene, only starting his journey at the start of this school year in Journalism. Once he learned more about how to work a camera during the first unit, he bought his own camera that allowed him to take better quality photos. Zacharias’ talents quickly grew, allowing him to start his own website that you can check out here! “Being able to capture players’ emotions while they do something they love and being able to capture a memory for them that they will be able to look back on, allows them to reminisce on moments that were important to them,” Zacharias said. “That makes me feel happy.”

"I love this photo because I think it captures, both my photography skills and the skills of the person being photographed. Every time I look at it, it makes me feel so proud of my improvements, and I can't help but smile," Naasz said.
Gaby Naasz (12)

Gaby Naasz’s found their passion for photography through their mom. They inherited a camera and started taking action shots at sports events. This year, they got a press pass, allowing them to take pictures on the field during games. “I’ve had a good amount of people ask me to take their senior photos,” Naasz said. Naasz brings their camera with them everywhere. “I love taking photos of anything and everything,” they said. “Capturing such a small moment of your life on camera makes it last forever.”

"I believe [this is] some of my best works because I took my time finding the right angle to capture the beauty of [this] animal," Rios (9) said.
Andy Mota Rios (9)

Andy Mota Rios started photography as a kid with her mom’s camera. Last Christmas, Rios was gifted her own camera to start using independently. Rios doesn’t have a specific photography style; instead, she takes photos of things she finds aesthetically pleasing in the moment. “I like looking back through my pictures just to think, ‘Wow! I did that!,’” Rios said. She has taken photos from the first day of school until now to capture her first year at U-High, and she plans to continue doing so until graduation.

"My favorite photo I've taken so fair is of my best friends during our first wilderness adventure hike. It symbolizes us stepping into our final year together," Deffenbaugh said.
Luke Deffenbaugh (12)

Luke Deffenbaugh first got interested in photography by seeing creative work on social media. “I want to capture my life through the lens,” Deffenbaugh said. You can catch the spirit stick holder with his camera at wilderness adventure clubs or sporting events. He plans on continuing photography as a hobby and possibly even starting his own business. “I wish students younger than me would go out to clubs they enjoy and take photos. You get to create core memories,” he said. “It’s a total blessing that I get to keep the shots of the memories and enjoy every moment.”
