Over the past four years Assistant Principal Steve Evans’ goal has been to transform the school into his own. He describes his work over the past years as “ticking off items” on his wishlist – these include new intercom systems, security cameras, new doors, paint, and general facility updates.

“Without a doubt I think the school is in a much better place than it was four years ago,” Evans said.

Evans works closely with ISU to find solutions for the school without encroaching on the school’s budget. Just this past year Evans worked with ISU to install a new intercom system. The system cost upwards of $600,000 and allows students to hear announcements anywhere on campus (outside doors, bathrooms, stairways, etc.). It was paid for by ISU as part of safety improvements to the school.

Upcoming improvements include brand new doors at all entrances and the new trophy case being installed this week. The new doors will bring a higher level of security to the building. The new first floor doors will be installed over spring break.

“They are going to rip the whole entire doors off and put brand new, up to date doors,” Evans said. “This has been something that I have been wanting to do to improve the school and I’ve been able to find ways that doesn’t cost us any money.”

The lounge’s new trophy case holds 21 trophies in a multi-tiered layout and has “University High School” in gold lettering at the top.

“I think the setting gives a great new light to some trophies that were easy to overlook,” senior and student body president Mary Spaulding said. “I love also that some teams personalized their trophies-some have medals dangling off them, basketball has the net, and cross country even has a bandana draped over theirs. It’s a really good reminder to everyone that walks in our gym and through the halls that the Pioneers don’t mess around and we take our athletics very seriously.”

In addition, the alumni in collaboration with superintendent Jeff Hill are working on implementing interactive displays in the lounge, allowing students to look through awards and information about the school’s history.

While the rumors are rampant that U-High will soon build a new facility, students can count on Evans to take care of the current facility.
