Keeping tradition alive

Founded in 1897, University High School was the first Laboratory school in the United States. With a deep-rooted history and an environment built on traditions, U-High is truly a special place. But with the presence of Covid-19 in our world, these traditions may look a little different than previous years. I met with faculty, staff, and students to discuss how students can still maintain their sense of unity during these difficult times.

“It’s more important now than ever for people to try to get to know new people, it’s crucial for people to be accepting of others and make an effort to reach out,” athletic director Steve Evans said. “Just a simple hello to a new face in the hallway can really make a difference in our school atmosphere.”

Even though we may not all see each other every day, there are still ways for fresh faces to make their mark during this school year.

“I especially feel bad for the freshman class during this time, since they don’t really know anything but this (pandemic) side of U-High, and I sincerely hope that they get to experience all of the special things we do at our school,” senior class president Tolu Adanri said. “There are still ways we are trying to build our sense of community here. Clubs are still meeting on zoom and that would be a great way to get involved and meet new people.”

The annual Class Night is still in the works to honor the Class of 2021, students and faculty are using their creativity to find ways to plan for this celebration.

“Recognize that this is a moment, and moments like these have happened in our nation’s past. Understand that our ability to accept moments like these and turn it into the best possible outcome as you can,” alum, educator, and parent  Robert Fitzgerald said. “Every senior class rises to the occasion. I have absolute faith that your class will do everything you can to make your final year meaningful and leave your legacy at U-High.”

With this week’s  announcement of the return to complete e-learning, Pioneers will face the challenge anew to make the most out of this school year.

“Stay strong, be respectful, and be creative. This is your guys’ year, and I am confident you will stick together to be successful,” said athletic director Steve Evans.
