U-High is well known for giving its students freedom. This means students can choose to leave campus during their free periods. Many students decide to study and eat during this time. For freshmen without a license, it isn’t as convenient to leave the school as it is for upperclassmen.
Freshman Taylor Shields said that she usually studies inside the school.
“I usually go down to the lounge and do homework during my free hour,” Shields said.
Contrasting Shields, freshman Amelia Bartlett expressed many frustrations when trying to study inside the school, including all the people and noise.
“The few times I have studied in the library, it’s been a little hard to [study] because people are in there and I want to socialize,” Bartlett said.
Similarly, freshman Tife Lawal also finds trouble when studying inside the school.
“The lounge I would not consider a place to study. It’s more like where you hang out with people, it’s a very popular freshman spot,” Lawal said. “In my free hour, we have a ‘freshman table’ in a corner and all you’re doing is talking. So you can’t get any work done. I’ve tried it, but it doesn’t work.”
Even though the lounge is not the best place to study for Lawal, she indicated that there are places around the school with resources that help her study. For example, asking teachers, other students, and the U-Link for help has been effective. Also utilizing the library for resources such as books and printers.
“Studying at school is easier to get help from teachers because you are there in person unlike when I am at home and have to send them an email,” Lawal said. “It can take them hours to respond, or days.”
However, studying at school is definitely only for some. Bartlett mentioned that she primarily studies at home. This is because she does not have a free period, and after school she has many activities.
“I usually do my studying at home,” Bartlett said. “I pretty much do it all by myself, sometimes my dad helps me.”
Everyone prefers different environments when it comes to studying, whether it be outside or inside of U-High.
“I typically go to the library, the lounge, a music practice room, and for the last few days, Mr. Roth’s classroom,” Lawal said.
